Spirometry

The best care
Spirometry is the most common of the pulmonary function tests (PFTs). It measures lung function, specifically the amount (volume) and/or speed (flow) of air that can be inhaled and exhaled. Dr. Patni's Healthcare Center provides this healthcheck up in Andheri East Mumbai.
Reasons to get tested:
-
To detect respiratory disease in patients presenting with symptoms of breathlessness, and to distinguish respiratory from cardiac disease as the cause
-
To measure bronchial responsiveness in patients suspected of having asthma
-
To diagnose and differentiate between obstructive lung disease and restrictive lung disease
-
To diagnose impairment from occupational asthma.
-
to measure the response to treatment of conditions which spirometry detects.

Preparation:
- Do not eat a heavy meal prior to the test
- Do not smoke for four to six hours prior to the test
- Before the test consult your doctor regarding the use of specific medications, including bronchodilators or inhalers. Sometimes, medication may be administered as part of the test.
During the test:
- A Clip will be placed over your nose and you will be asked to breathe through the mouth into a tube connected to a machine known as a spirometer.
- First you have to breathe in deeply and then exhale as quickly and forcefully as possible into the tube.
- The exhale must last at least six seconds for the machine to work properly.
- Usually the test is repeated three times and the best of the three results is considered to be the measure of the lung function.
- It is crucial that you cooperate with the technician if accurate results are to be obtained.
